The Companion will be launched on Wednesday 2 April commencing at 4 pm at the Confederation of Passenger Transport’s offices at Drury House, 34-43 Russell Street, London WC2B 5HA. Through a range of articles the Companion explores every aspect of the industry’s history, and will be an essential reference work for anyone with an interest in road passenger transport. It is the second encyclopaedic work of reference prepared by the Roads and Road Transport History Association and follows the Companion to British Road Haulage History, published in 2003.

The 730 page volume comprises some 850 entries by 150 expert authors, covering all forms of public passenger transport by road, including buses, coaches, trams, and taxis, as well as minor modes such as rickshaws and sedan chairs.  These are approached from many different perspectives, including vehicles, operators, services, legislation, regulation, key individuals, the industry’s customers, cultural aspects, and technologies in use and developed during the period covered.  Entries provide a comprehensive overview of the topic, along with a range of key references to further reading to guide the reader in their further exploration of topics of particular interest.
